The Government has confirmed it is proceeding with plans to introduce two new large amphibious ships.
Shortly before his retirement, the Defence Minister, Senator Hill, said the two large amphibious ships would be named HMAS Canberra and HMAS Adelaide.
The acquisition projects to acquire these new ships have received first pass approval from the Government. Second pass approval is planned for 2007.
Subject to these approvals, the two large amphibious ships were expected to enter service with the RAN from 2012.
The amphibious ships would support the deployment of forces and assist in a range of tasks such as peace-keeping and peace-monitoring and regional disaster relief.
