11 June 2008

The Federal Parliament's Defence Sub-Committee is investigating claims for compensation of former RAAF F-111 deseal-reseal workers including the Commonwealth's response to the health and support needs of former deseal-reseal workers and their families.

As part of the inquiry process, the Sub-Committee has requested submission to the inquiry.

Submissions will form the basis of the Committee's reporting and public hearing program.

Public hearings are also being organised in Brisbane for later in 2008 dates will be advised on the inquiry webstie (details below).

Submissions should address the inquiry's terms of referencfe so the Committee can ascertain if the response so far was adequate, whether it was consistent with the findings of the Study of Health Outcomes in Aircraft Maintenance Personnel (SHOAMP) and whether the overall administration and handling of the program was adequate.

The terms of reference are:

  • the adequacy and equity of the Health Care Scheme in meeting the health and support needs of participants and their families and whether this was consistent with the SHOAMP findings;
  • the adequacy and equity of the financial element of the Ex-Gratia Scheme and whether it was consistent with (i) the findings of SHOAMP, (ii) the Health Care Scheme response, (iii) the Tier definitions, and (iv) one-off payments to other veteran groups;
  • whether the overall handling and administration of ex-gratia and compensation claims was appropriate, timely and transparent for both participants and their families.

Details of the inquiry, including the full terms of reference, dates of public hearings and notes on how to prepare submissions, can be found on the Committee's website at www.aph.gov.au/house/committee/jfadt/deseal_reseal/index.htm.

The closing date for submissions is Thursday, 26 June 2008. To help with electronic publishing of submissions, the Committee would prefer them to be emailed to jscfadt@aph.gov.au or sent on disk or CD-ROM to the Committee Secretariat in Microsoft Word or Portable Document Format (PDF).
