12 October 2003 - Sea Fury WH587
FAAAA National and NSW Division Secretary Mike Heneghan recently received an email from David Bell in the UK:
"I trust that you'll forgive my writing to you, but I have a query about a working Sea Fury that you or your members might be able to solve.
"A few years ago, while visiting my brother in Canada, I photographed a lovely Sea Fury in RAN markings, namely WH587, coded 105.
"It seems reasonable that the aeroplane is in authentic markings, but I've drawn a complete blank in trying to discover the squadron in whose markings it's displayed, and the location where it might have been based whilst wearing those markings.
"If you can help, I'd be most grateful. Many thanks, and congratulations on an interesting website."
WH587 was one of the replacement Sea Furies for aircraft lost in the Korean War. The carrier HMAS Sydney picked it up with other aircraft from Singapore in February 1952. The aircraft spent most of its flying time in 805 Squadron.
It is a well-known aircraft as a great action shot of it was taken when flying over Nowra, and so it appears in many magazines when articles are written on Sea Furies. The pilot on that occasion was Lcdr Brian Stock RN.
WH587 was sold in a flying condition in 1965, to a US buyer.
