Mystery Photo No. 55 was forwarded by Kim Dunstan, who sourced it from the National Archives of Australia. It shows the foredeck awning of an Australian capital ship, with something going on that has obviously captured the interest of those on it.
In fact, both the position/timing of the ship and the event they are watching are both of significant and separate historical interest. The smaller photo to the right, showing a Escoffier pickle jar, may help work out what’s going on.
So, our question is: What is the ship, where is she and what has attracted the interest of her crew?
