Sikorsky HO3-S Helicopter

The photograph depicts this US Navy HO3-S helicopter on loan to HMAS Sydney during the Korean War.  They were the US Navy version of the civilian Sikorsky S-51 (the USN never used the ‘Dragonfly’ name). It was powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Jnr 9-cylinder 450HP power plant.

Bell Iroquois UH-1B and UH-1C

Three UH-1B helicopters were introduced into the RAN in 1964 and four UH-1C models in 1965-66. They were used for training, search and rescue and utility roles both ashore and embarked on RAN ships.

Bell Kiowa 206B-1

Two Kiowa helicopters were obtained for the RAN from the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation in 1974. Further aircraft were obtained on loan from the Army from 1978 to support the survey work of HMAS Moresby. Kiowas were a familiar sight at the naval air station HMAS Albatross on training, communications and light utility duties.

MH-60R Seahawk Romeos

The MH-60R Seahawk Romeo naval combat helicopter has been ordered for use in the Fleet Air Arm. Acquisition of 24 Romeos means that Navy will have the capacity to provide simultaneously at least eight warships with a combat helicopter, including Anzac Class frigates and the new air warfare destroyers.
