Two Kiowa helicopters were obtained for the RAN from the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation in 1974. Further aircraft were obtained on loan from the Army from 1978 to support the survey work of HMAS Moresby. Kiowas were a familiar sight at the naval air station HMAS Albatross on training, communications and light utility duties.

The MH-60R Seahawk Romeo naval combat helicopter has been ordered for use in the Fleet Air Arm. Acquisition of 24 Romeos means that Navy will have the capacity to provide simultaneously at least eight warships with a combat helicopter, including Anzac Class frigates and the new air warfare destroyers. The remainder will be based at HMAS Albatross at Nowra, New South Wales.
The European-designed MRH-90 multi-role helicopter is currently being introduced into the Fleet Air Arm and the Australian Army. They will operate from shore bases and from the Canberra Class amphibious assault ships which are currently under construction.
