Lieutenant John Gunn of the 1939 entry to the RAN College died in Sydney on 1 April 2017. He was the navigator of the British destroyer HMS Malcolm in 1944/5 in the North Atlantic. Subsequently he was an original pilot of the 20 CAG of HMAS Sydney and was a survivor of that ship’s worst aircraft accident when Lt. Danny Buchanan’s aircraft jumped the barrier and landed on top of 5 aircraft which had just landed, finishing on top of John’s aircraft. The flight deck fire crew were astonished to find him alive. Later he worked directly for the CEOs of Vickers and Rolls Royce in the U K, started his own business, became an author and playwright, and ran a”children’s programme on the ABC —–“Ïcarus.” He led a full and rich life and will be sadly missed.
