I have the sad duty of passing on the news that my old mate Ian Hughes has died in his sleep after a long battle with dementia.
Ian joined the Navy as a Stoker and first saw active service during the Indonesian Confrontation on HMAS Snipe.
He was learning to fly for his private licence and changed over from being a Stoker to the dark side by becoming a Spanner Wanker. In his new branch saw him posted to the second RANHFV, serving at Blackhorse and Bearcat in 1968/69.
In 1969 the US Army’s 135th AHC held a competition for a new logo design which Ian won with the now famous EMU Logo.
Ian will also be remembered for his comic strip HMAS Wart in the Navy News.
Ian’s funeral will be on Wednesday 22 January at 1300 at the Rose Chapel Palmdale NSW. I will forward the link when available
RIP Old Mate.
