It is my sad duty to announce the passing of long time member Harold Hurren, who passed away on Sunday 4th December 2022 aged 90.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday 14th December at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 37 Sutherland St. Kilmore Victoria.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.

Harold Ranelagh Hurren, Service Number A38167, was born in Melbourne, on 01September 1932, and enlisted for 12 years in the RAN at Melbourne on 06March 1950, and  was drafted to HMAS Cerberus for recruit training.

After basic training Harold obtained his ET1 certificate, he then began specialist training at Cerberus, on 06 September 1950 as an EM 2 (A), continuing until qualifying as an Electricians Mate (Air) on 20 April 1951.

On 29 April 1951 Harold was drafted to HMAS Albatross at Nowra where he completed a Flight Service Course on18 Jun 1951, was qualified as a Cinema Operator on 18 August 1951 and then became qualified to sign Form 700 on 29 August 1951.

Harold gained a certificate for advancement to EM 1 (A) on 25 February 1952 and on 21 April 1952 joined 723 Squadron at HMAS Albatross where he served until 02 September 1952. Although a specific date is not quoted or details provided; apparently around this time Harold was involved in a serious road accident, as he is reported as being at HMAS Penguin (presumably at BNH) on 05 September 1952 and then drafted to HMAS Cerberus on 16 September1952. At Cerberus it appears that Harold was under medical supervision for sometime and that he was fitted with an artificial left lower limb and was discharged to shore on 22 July 1953.
