John William Ikin born 18/07/1931 in Melbourne. He attended the Elwood Central school then having moved to Hampton, the Brighton Technical School. John became the first ever Cadet Lieutenant in the school Cadet corps and had the chance to go to Duntroon Military College but joined the Navy instead. He was also very involved with St.Bedes church of England, being in the choir and the Church of England Boys Society as well as maintaining a strong faith.He joined The Royal Australian Navy, Fleet Air Arm on 23/03/1949 for 12 years serving with various aircraft squadrons on HMAS Sydney, Vengeance and Melbourne.
On the completion of his engagement he was employed by the Commonwealth Department of Supply in NSW as a Naval Ordinance Inspector at the naval stores depot at Newington and Kingswood including other areas as required. Returning to Melbourne with wife Sylvia, son Dennis and daughter Susan, he was employed as production manager for Olsen Engineering for 11 years then an Engineering and tool supply company as power tool manager where he finally retired at age 64.
During his working life his interests were flying with Moorabbin Aviation Academy, gliding with Sportsavia at Tocumwal, playing cricket with Brighton Cricket Club and Ten pin bowling with the Chadstone Bowling Centre League. He was also involved with Masonic Lodge initiated 1960 in NSW, promoted to 32 degree on 10/08/2002.
John had been living with Sylvia at Chestnut Gardens aged care in Doveton for the last 5 years until his passing on Sunday 5th April 2026. He was deeply loved and will be very much missed by all
