We have been advised of the death of Lancelot Robert “Larry” Larder, who passed away on 25 April 2025 (Anzac Day).
Larry was a Queenlander by birth, hailing originally from the city of Bundaberg where he was born on 12 November 1938. He joined the Navy in July of 1957 and, after completing his initial training at HMAS Cerberus, was posted to HMAS Albatross as an REM(A) (Electrical sailor). Most of his service was spent at that establishment.
The Navy obviously agreed with him as he applied for a Commission and, having passed the requisite Board, was discharged as a Petty Officer on 27 April 1966 and appointed as a Sub Lieutenant SDEN. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, having again spent most of his service time at Albatross with an occasional deployment aboard HMAS Melbourne. A notable exception was his two year attachment with the USN which resulted in commendation from that Service.
Larry discharged from the Navy in June of 1980 and studied to become an electronics engineer to start his own business “Antilope Marine”. His expertise was in great demand worldwide, including as a supply contractor for INCAT – an innovative company building and repairing large catamarans in Hobart, TAS. He travelled widely during this time.
On completion of his working life Larry retired to regional northern NSW. Unfortunately he developed dementia in his latter years, a cruel and debilitating disease that was eventually to take his life aged 86. He leaves behind his spouse, Frances.
We remember him, for he was one of us.
