We have been advised that Nigel Lee Crossed the Bar on 15 May 2021 aged 77, having suffered from cancer for several years.  He leaves behind his partner Ana and daughter Nigella.

Nigel was born on 03 March 1944 and enlisted in the RAN in April 1962, aged 18 years. He discharged on 6 April 1974 after twelve years of service.

During his time in the RAN he served in HMA Ships Albatross, Sydney and Melbourne and various Squadrons including 816 (Gannets) and 723 (Iroquois).  Nigel also served in the third contingent of the RAN Helicopter Flight Vietnam as a Crew Chief, and was the recipient of the US Air Medal for Valor the citation for which reads:

Naval Airman Nigel W Lee, Royal Australian Navy; the Air Medal with “V” Device.

For:

Heroism while participating in aerial flight on 18 May 1970, while serving as the crew chief of a UH-1H helicopter in the 135th Aviation Company. On that date, Naval Airman Lee’s helicopter was in a flight of eight troop carrying helicopters going into a landing zone where heavy enemy fire had to be suppressed in the surrounding tree lines. On several lifts, aircraft attempting extractions were damaged by enemy fire and could not finish the operation, but Naval Airman Lee’s quick and accurate return fire was a factor that made completion of the remaining lifts possible. Naval Airman Lee’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Royal Australian Navy and reflected great credit upon himself and the military service.

GIVEN UNDER MY HAND IN THE CITY OF WASHINGTON,

THIS 8TH DAY OF MARCH 2007.

(Signed) THE ADJUTANT GENERAL

(Signed) SECRETARY OF THE ARMY

Nigel is remembered as a great mechanic and a good man to get things done.
