The Fleet Air Arm Association Tasmanian Division is saddened by the loss of Matt “Jake” Jacobs, who passed away on 14 May 2018 in Tasmania, after a struggle with cancer.
He was a long serving and most valued member of our Association and will be sorely missed by his shipmates. Condolences to his family on their sad loss.
He worked for his father as a men’s hairdresser when he left school, but when he saw Barry Simpson at a bus stop (in rig) he stopped to offer a lift and question him about the Navy. The following January Barry was fighting bushfires in the Nowra area and there was Jake along side him.
He always was interested in and had great knowledge of engines and he naturally became an NAME. Nothing was too much trouble for him, and was always ready to help in any situation.
He was one of the founding members of the Tasmanian Division FAAA and volunteered to become the scribe – a job he did remarkably well. In later years he drove a schoolbus and was very popular with the pupils and their parents.
We are privileged to have known him as a shipmate, and a thorough gentleman, and someone who was loved by all his family.
RIP Jake
